ST. PAUL, MINN.—A partnership between 3M Architectural Markets and designer Todd Bracher has resulted in the development, and now the commercialization of Lightfalls, an innovative new architectural lighting fixture. The fixture capitalizes on the laws of physics to distribute light from a single LED source over a large space, pouring light from one highly reflective surface to another.

“Lightfalls is the result of physics meeting design,” said Bracher. “We are able to extend the reach of a single LED further than ever before—it is the work of optical engineers with unique materials who created it to steer light in efficient ways. The science behind it is why I’m so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with 3M.”

The lighting system utilizes proprietary 3M technology to create “Virtual LEDs” from a single LED source, allowing light to be distributed from just one LED source to multiple other, near-perfect images of the physical LED. The cornerstone of creating the “Virtual LED” is a proprietary, more than 98 percent reflective 3M film that is shaped to efficiently steer light from one module to another, creating the effect of multiple light sources when in reality there is only one. The end result is cascading light that creates a highly aesthetic effect on walls and ceilings.

Lightfalls is now available in various configurations including a single sconce or forms with three, five or seven reflectors. Each configuration (except the single sconce) can be either linear or curved/circular depending on the designer’s preference. Only one reflector in each configuration actually has an LED behind it, meaning that installation is simple and easy. Customizable to complement any project, the reflectors are available in several finishes including smoke, bronze, chrome, red and white.

Lightfalls is a product that is at its core driven by the reflective nature of light and the ability of experienced optical engineers to capture and harness that light in a unique way. Due to the proprietary materials used, Lightfalls and the “Virtual LED” are unique to 3M.
