SOUTH LAKE TAHOE—Embassy Suites Hotels, the national brand of upscale, all-suite hotels, has honored David Hansen, chief engineer of the Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe Hotel & Ski Resort, with the company’s Spirit of Embassy Award. This award designates Hansen as a top performer within Embassy Suites Hotels.

Nominated by their peers because of exemplary loyalty, attitude and service, Spirit of Embassy Award winners continually exceed expectations of both customers and fellow team members. Less than 1 percent of all Embassy Suites team members nationwide receive this honor each year. Hansen was nominated for the award by his peers after proving to be an exceptional role model.

“Hansen’s contributions to sustainability and energy savings have been nothing short of phenomenal,” said John Steinbach, general manager, and we are proud of his recognition as a Spirit of Embassy Award winner, the company’s most prestigious team member award.”

Like many businesses these days Embassy Suites is faced with many challenges—remaining profitable to its owners, maintaining exceptional guest service in difficult times and finding ways to cut costs. With Hansen at the helm of the sustainability efforts, he has put things in place, made changes and empowered all team members to make a difference.

When they compare 2008 versus 2009 (January through June), here are the facts: Electricity use was reduced by 575,000 kilowatt hours, which equals a savings of $98,902 YTD. Natural gas was reduced by 9,314 dekatherms which equals a savings of $67,709 YTD. Waste removal has been reduced by 48 tons which equals a savings of $15,250 YTD. These cost savings have been due to things like the installation of an energy management system, installation of variable frequency drives on large horsepower pumps, installation of compact fluorescent and LED lighting, composting food waste and recycling and converting the laundry over to ozone.

Embassy Suites Hotels, which has nearly 30,000 employees and 192 hotels worldwide, recognizes only 70 employees a year with this honor. As a recipient of the award, Hansen will receive a cash prize of $350, a Spirit Award plaque and lapel pin, and other special recognition throughout his career with Embassy Suites Hotels.
