TEMPERANCE, MICH.—MTS Seating, a leading manufacturer of hospitality stackable seating, was recognized by Consumers Energy of Michigan for its commitment to renewable energy through the Green Generation program. As one of the top 10 largest participants in the program, MTS utilizes more than a half a million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per year. This equals nearly 20 percent of the company’s total annual consumption.

“For an operation of our size, purchasing even a small percentage of renewable energy can have a noticeable impact on our carbon footprint,” said Phil Swy, CEO of MTS. “We also recognize the importance of supporting a sustainable infrastructure in Michigan and the U.S., and hope to encourage other local businesses to follow our example.”

Consumers Energy’s Green Generation program has been in place since 2005, offering wind power and biomass fueled power to customers in the western and southeastern areas of Michigan. The program is certified by Green-e, which ensures that the program meets strict environmental and consumer protection standards. Jennifer White, sustainability coordinator for MTS, accepted the award.

“Purchasing renewables is an integral part of the MTS SynerGreen program,” she said. “We make an effort to blend ‘green’ thinking into every aspect of our business; our utilities and energy consumption was a natural place to start.”

MTS Seating’s SynerGreen program for sustainability includes scrap recycling, carbon offsets, GREENGUARD Certification of all seating products, and sustainable material selection, along with efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing process.
