SUNNYVALE, CALIF.—ClearEdge Power released a white paper exploring the tangible environmental benefits that make stationary fuel cells a true “green” energy solution. The paper, authored by the ClearEdge Power product management team, offers a quantitative assessment of fuel cell combined heat and power (CHP), as it applies to commercial building applications with specific case examples.

“There is a market tendency to discount fuel cell based energy solutions as less green than other, more commonly regarded clean energy solutions because they utilize natural gas,” said ClearEdge Power’s Director of Product Management and Applications, Kent McCord.

In the new white paper titled, “The Green Edge of Fuel Cells,” ClearEdge Power engineers articulate the numerous environmental benefits inherent in the application of the company’s PureCell stationary fuel cell systems that may go unrecognized in conventional analysis of green technologies.

Fuel cells are the cleanest and most efficient way of using natural gas to produce energy. With system efficiencies of up to 90 percent, PureCell fuel cell systems promote continuous, sustainable operations while reducing the amount of energy consumed on-site. These reductions offset peak demand and help achieve climate action and energy efficiency goals. Additionally, fuel cell systems, specifically the PureCell systems from ClearEdge Power, operate with zero water consumption, saving millions of gallons of water each year. The white paper also discusses the more pragmatic environmental benefit of flexible siting, the ability to locate the fuel cells in a wide variety of physical locations, as an additional environmental benefit for commercial customers.

Systems Require Little Space

“In an era when urbanization is an increasing trend, many companies are decreasing their environmental footprint by making the most efficient use of space.” said Katrina Fritz, Vice President of External Affairs & Corporate Strategy for ClearEdge Power. “Many clean energy solutions require a large commitment of real estate, which can be a strong deterrent to adoption by creating a significant negative environmental impact and cost. PureCell systems can be located virtually anywhere, often making use of existing real estate that would otherwise be unusable, such as rooftops and subfloors.”

PureCell systems are the exclusive fuel cell solutions from ClearEdge Power that offer the potential to deliver 5 kilowatts to multiple megawatts of usable energy. The core technology in the PureCell systems is the culmination of more than 50 years of research and development. The benefit of this experience is most evident in the PureCell Systems’ 10-year fuel cell stack life and the company’s more than 11 million hours of fleet field operations, in 19 different countries around the world.
