SONOMA, CALIF.—Tens of thousands of Californians, including a pledge of hundreds of California Fairmont Hotels & Resorts colleagues, friends and family members volunteered to remove debris from the coast, creeks, rivers, lakes and shorelines all around California protecting wildlife from harm while taking care of the environment on Saturday, September 19, 2015 for California Coastal Cleanup Day.

In 2014, nearly 67,000 volunteers removed more than 1,190,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California’s coast and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet, and organized by the Ocean Conservancy.

The event took place at more than 750 sites on California beaches, bays, rivers, creeks, parks, roadsides, and highways.

“California Coastal Cleanup Day is a significant coastal protection and restoration volunteer event and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts of California has proudly supported this event for the past several years,” says Tom Klein, Regional Vice-President of Operations and General Manager at the Fairmont San Francisco. “Over a century ago Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land, communities and people where we do business. Energizing our commitment to ‘think globally and act locally’, we are proud to support hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships and learning while addressing a universal environmental issue in a way that hits close to home. Our Fairmont volunteers value the treasure of the California coast, and annually we show our dedication to its protection and preservation.”
