MIAMI—On Tuesday, October 14, the Greater Miami & The Beaches Hotel Association (GMBHA) honored hotels and allied businesses that are leading the adoption of sustainable hospitality practices at its 2nd Annual Sustainable Hospitality Awards. Award winners were selected from nominated local hotels and businesses that are advancing sustainability practices through implementation, promotion and education of guests and employees.

The GMBHA’s Sustainable Hospitality Council celebrated 21 outstanding hotel properties and businesses that are advancing the principles and practices of sustainable hospitality, resource conservation and preservation of South Florida’s unique environment.

Keynote speaker, Diana C. Beltran Gonzalez, Learning & Delivery Manager, Global Learning and Development at Wyndham Hotel Group addressed the audience of 150 guests. “Our industry heavily depends on natural resources in several ways; from the energy and water our properties consume to the surrounding natural environment we use to market and attract guests in order to grow our business and community,” said Gonzalez. “We need to continue collaboration amongst hoteliers to be proactive versus reactive as an industry and continue to find more effective ways to operate and mitigate our environmental impact. Being a sustainable hotel operator is not just right thing to do for the environment but the smart thing to do as a proactive successful business.”

Guest speaker Glenn Hasek, Publisher and Editor of Green Lodging News, a weekly e-mail newsletter and website that covers topics ranging from energy management, water conservation, and waste management to green design also addressed the audience.
