TAMPA, FLA.—Hasek Communications, the Tampa, Fla.-based publisher of Green Lodging News, has added a ConservCo case study to its website. The case study details how ConservCo was able to help a 196-room Caribbean resort dramatically reduce its water consumption by 27 million gallons annually. ConservCo performed an audit of the resort, its golf course, and landscape irrigation system.
Using proprietary protocols and procedures based on standards and benchmarks derived from the US EPA, the US Green Building Council, and the Irrigation Association, work performed by ConservCo technicians included inventorying fixtures and appliances, taking flow rate and static pressure measurements, checking for and measuring leaks, observing and documenting employee procedures, and cataloging each component of the resort’s irrigation system. A sample of some of issues found included:
• Fixtures in guestrooms consuming 30 percent more water than the EPA’s WaterSense specifications;
• The resort’s laundry facility using more than 11 million gallons of water annually; and,
• A combination of irrigation system design problems, sprinkler malfunctions, and watering schedules contributing to an inefficient use of more than 123 million gallons of water each year.
Among ConservCo’s recommendations the resort initiated the following:
• Replaced fixtures in guestrooms and suites with WaterSense-labeled showerheads and faucets;
• Installed high-efficiency toilets in guestrooms and non-water-using urinals in public restrooms;
• Installed a water recycling system in the laundry; and,
• Retrofitted sprinklers (and changed their spacing), upgraded controllers, revised irrigation schedules, and made minor landscaping design changes.
By implementing these and other recommendations the resort has axed its utility expenses by approximately $370,000 a year.
