A big thank you to all of you who have already signed up for and/or completed the Green Lodging Survey that was launched by Green Lodging News and Greenview this past week. The survey will remain open through the end of August. If you have not yet visited the survey site, please take a moment to do so. Owners and operators of lodging establishments around the planet are eligible to participate. Please be sure to spread the word about the survey. You will continue to see reminders on the Green Lodging News website and in our weekly e-newsletter.

Please be sure to support our survey sponsors: The Arbor Day Foundation, Pineapple Hospitality, reCollect2 Co. and Aquawing Ozone Laundry Systems. If you are interested in sponsoring the survey, click here for details. You can also contact me at (813) 510-3868, or by e-mail at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.

On another note, I am sure you have noticed that Green Lodging News publishes guest columns every couple of weeks. I am currently accepting proposals for future guest columns. If you would like to help educate our readers about a particular topic or feel inspired to share an opinion about a green issue of relevance, contact me.

I am always open to story ideas as well. Success stories, whether having to do with green building or operational changes, or perhaps even community initiatives, are of interest to me.

With the launch of the Green Lodging Survey with Greenview, and our 10th anniversary coming next month, this is an exciting year for Green Lodging News. I am looking forward to sharing the remainder of it with you.

Green Lodging News Adds GSS Case Study to Website

Green Lodging News has added a Global Sustainability Solutions (GSS) case study to its website. The case study details how GSS was able to assist the Hilton Los Angeles Airport (Hilton LAX) with mattress and box spring disposal (3,943 pieces). GSS project manager, Ashley Seaman, coordinated with Hilton LAX to determine the best way to efficiently remove and replace the bed sets with minimal disruption while seamlessly coordinating the complex logistics among its mattress partner, Serta, the hotel staff, the GSS crew of 15-plus professionals and the recycling facility.

GSS accepted and staged the new bed sets at the rate of two 53-foot trailer loads per day. Then the replacement cycle began by removing the old sets from the allocated floor and loading them onto the recycling trucks. GSS averaged 400+ pieces per day, for a total of 219,760 pounds of mattress waste diverted from landfills in a speedy 18 days. Daily allocations of specific rooms, confined to specific floors, reduced guest disruption and allowed the hotel housekeeping staff to quickly follow the GSS crew to remake beds and return rooms to guest readiness as soon as possible. Their smooth coordination and efficiency managed to save both time and money, reducing cost by $56,000 compared to landfilling, and reducing process time from 23 days to 18 days.
