Just one month remains before this November’s annual HX: The Hotel Experience (formerly International Hotel, Motel & Restaurant Show) and Boutique Design New York (BDNY). I posted an article about the shows this past week. HX will take place from November 13 to 15 and BDNY from November 13 to 14 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York. I strongly encourage you to attend. Together, the trade shows will feature approximately 1,000 companies. Many of those suppliers will feature products and technologies to help you dramatically reduce waste, improve profitability, and conserve water and energy.

I have been attending HX, BDNY and HX’s predecessor show for more than 20 years and have always found them to be highly educational and great networking opportunities.

Together, this year’s shows will include eight educational sessions on the trade show floor that are focused on one aspect of sustainability or another. I will be moderating two of them. Amenities (soaps, shampoos, lotions, dispensers, etc.) have always fascinated me and at this year’s HX I will be leading a discussion entitled, “Greenwashing or Nothing But the Truth—The Untold Story of the Greening of Amenities.” This session will take place on Sunday, November 13 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. I will be peppering panelists with questions related to amenity ingredients, zero waste and carbon neutrality, and the operational and environmental impact of using dispensers instead of plastic amenity bottles.

Results of Two Industry-Leading Surveys

The second session I will be moderating, “Behind the Numbers—What Two Leading 2016 Surveys Say About Sustainability Trends,” will take place on Monday, November 14 from noon to 1 p.m. In this session the highlights of two leading industry surveys will be revealed. First, results of the 2016 Lodging Survey will be shared. Conducted every two years, the 2016 Lodging Survey is a production of STR, the American Hotel & Lodging Assn. and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation. Second, highlights of the first annual Green Lodging Survey, a production of Greenview and Green Lodging News, will be shared before an audience for the very first time. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the latest trends in green hospitality.

On Monday, November 14 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the NYC Hospitality Alliance will present, “Serving the Environment: Sustainable Restaurants”. On Monday, November 14 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. the Hotel Association of New York City will present its annual Sustainability Awards. On Tuesday, November 15 from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., a Food Waste Management session will be held.

As part of BDNY, four NEWH Green Voice sessions are planned. Topics include: “Biophilia: The Next Phase of Occupant Comfort”; “Health in Hospitality: Taking the Pulse of Your Place”; “Eyewitness to Climate Change: A Global Perspective from the Researchers Behind the Science”; and “The Next Hotels: Beyond Sustainability”. I look forward to seeing you at HX & BDNY. If you would like to meet me there, contact me ateditor@greenlodgingnews.com.
