CANCUN, MEXICO—ME Cancun, part of the ME by Melia hotel brand operated by Meliá Hotels International, has been awarded the Certified Silver Certificate by EarthCheck. EarthCheck is a leading certifier of travel and tourism organizations and has bestowed this honor onto the hotel for its high standard of environmental performance.
ME Cancun joins industry leaders from more than 65 countries by being awarded EarthCheck Silver Certified status. To gain this, the ME Cancun team communicated its environmental footprint to independent auditors and adhered to an internationally recognized standard of best practice.
“We are honored to be recognized by EarthCheck in a category that our team has so diligently tied into our hotel’s blueprint,” said Ernesto Luna, General Manager of ME Cancun. “We pride ourselves on offering a complete experience for guests that includes making a significant impact on the environment and the hotel’s natural surroundings.”
Year’s Worth of Data Submitted
During the process, ME Cancun was also required to submit a year’s worth of operational data which was benchmarked against industry best practice. The data was then measured against a number of key indicators such as energy and water consumption, total waste production, and community commitment.
“By taking a scientific approach to measuring the effectiveness of their sustainability practices, ME Cancun was able to identify where they were out-performing others and where room for improvement remained,” explained EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore.
“Achieving certification is not an easy task and many organizations do not make it past the benchmarking stage,” Moore added. “Securing a highly-ranked benchmarking result requires a strong commitment across all levels of an organization and the imbedding of sustainability principles into all policies and procedures.”
