ANN ARBOR, MICH.—NSF Sustainability, a division of global public health organization NSF International, has certified global carpet tile manufacturer Interface’s GlasBac, GlasBac RE and CushionBac products to NSF/ANSI 140: Sustainability Assessment for Carpet. These products are manufactured at the company’s facility in Jiangsu Province, China, the first manufacturing plant in China to produce more sustainable carpet products certified by NSF International.

“Interface has demonstrated a true global commitment to sustainability,” said Tom Bruursema, General Manager of NSF Sustainability. “Product specifiers around the globe now have even greater access to Interface’s certified sustainable carpet products, which is an essential component in helping their customers worldwide meet their sustainability and environmental goals.

NSF/ANSI 140 establishes sustainability performance requirements for carpet products throughout their life cycle and supply chain. Designers, architects, facility managers, purchasing professionals and contractors depend on the standard to specify and obtain reliable and more sustainable carpet products. In fact, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which serves as the purchasing arm of the U.S. government, requires a minimum gold level certification to NSF/ANSI 140: Sustainability Assessment for Carpet for all broadloom (wall-to-wall) carpet and carpet tile.

NSF certified sustainable carpet products also may contribute innovation points toward a building’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification as well as Materials and Resources credits under the Green Globes green building rating program.

Certification Issued in One of Three Levels

Utilizing a point system, NSF/ANSI 140 establishes a carpet product’s social and environmental performance, including labor practices, human rights, product lifecycle assessment, energy efficiency, environmental management, reclamation and end-of-product-life management. Based on the number of points earned, certification is issued in one of three levels—silver, gold or platinum.

Interface’s GlasBac and CushionBac carpet tiles achieved gold certification and GlasBac RE carpet achieved platinum certification, the highest level of achievement. GlasBac RE contains up to 41 percent recycled content, sourced through the company’s pioneering ReEntry carpet tile reclamation program, which has diverted 130,000 tons of carpet from the landfill since 1995.

“Interface is committed to sustainability leadership in every aspect of our business, and we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint throughout the globe,” says Connie Hensler, Director of Corporate Life Cycle Assessment Programs at Interface. “We previously obtained NSF/ANSI 140 certification for products manufactured at our facilities in LaGrange, Ga., USA and Chonburi, Thailand and now the Jiangsu Province China facility is proudly joining that list.”

The NSF National Center for Sustainability Standards (NCSS) facilitated the development of NSF/ANSI 140 in partnership with the Carpet and Rug Institute and other industry, academic and regulatory participants.
