PETER ISLAND, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS—Boaters have known for decades how to harness the power of wind, and, this past spring, Peter Island Resort & Spa followed their lead by becoming the first to install wind turbines in the Virgin Island territory.

“We’ve studied the idea for years as a method to better manage our energy needs while maintaining the beautiful, undisturbed landscapes that Peter Island is known for,” said Van Ande, CEO of the property. “These new state-of-the-art turbines are not only environmentally friendly but also energy efficient, which makes them an ideal option for this geographic location. Many people talk about what should be done, but we decided to do it. We are proud to lead by example in terms of the benefits derived for the environment and the resort cost structure. This is something we hope others will follow; the region could greatly benefit from this technology.”

During the spring, the resort installed two wind turbines or, more specifically, two WES30, two-blade, high performance, midsize 250kW wind turbines. This new, innovative system is monitored by a computer program via the Internet, which adjusts output based on activity and effectively tracks consumption. These turbines will help the resort decrease its fuel consumption by 25 percent and its overall carbon footprint by 75 percent. Although the resort faces the occasional flirtation with hurricanes and strong storms, the WES30 is a wind turbine that can be secured during high-force winds, which will expedite resort response following a storm. The twin blades also have the benefit of being a reduced hazard to local wildlife.

Peter Island Resort & Spa recognizes that on a global level the installation of these two turbines is a first step toward a greener Peter Island. Additionally, there will be more immediate improvements in guest services. Savvy travelers can attest to the common electrical disturbances experienced when traveling throughout the Caribbean. However, these new wind turbines will allow Peter Island to deliver a more consistent electrical supply, negating disruptions in guest services throughout the resort.

The effect of the turbines on the resort’s visual aesthetics was also considered before installation. The operations team and project architects painstakingly selected a location that would not impair the panoramic views Peter Island is known for. What’s more, the location is the optimum site for wind absorption and is conveniently located by the resort’s power station.
