STAMFORD, CONN.—Officials of the Sheraton Stamford Hotel recently announced the completion of the hotel’s next step to achieving its sustainable goals to improve environmental efficiencies that help the hotel as well as its community. The Sheraton Stamford Hotel just completed a $200,000 project, in which they upgraded their lighting to LED throughout the hotel. According to a study from the Connecticut Energy Efficient Fund, over the life of the fixtures, the hotel’s increase in LED usage will have saved an estimated 7,412,770.00 kWh. This is equivalent to 3,755,988 pounds of coal not burned, 308,755 gallons of oil not burned, or 882 homes supplied with electricity for one year.

“Savings add up fairly quickly,” said Mike Bennett, General Manager, Sheraton Stamford Hotel. “When we use less energy, there’s less energy we have to buy, and that means less waste and more savings.”

By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful environmental pollutants, this one project will also help reduce air pollution and improve air quality in Connecticut and the Northeast region by avoiding 8,037,815 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, 2,242 pounds of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions, and 4,563 pounds of sulfur Oxides (Sox) emissions.

Eyes on Starwood’s 2020 Goal

The Sheraton Stamford is also striving to reach Starwood’s company-wide goal of achieving a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption and 20 percent reduction in water consumption by the year 2020. This recent lighting upgrade will propel the hotel towards this goal even faster.

“As a major business in the area, we are motivated to do our part in maintaining a focus on going green in this community,” Bennett said.

The Sheraton Stamford Hotel does not omit the seemingly small details in its green initiative. The hotel partners with Clean the World to recycle soap and bathroom amenities. Through the work of the Sheraton’s housekeeping team, each year thousands of pounds of discarded soap and gently used bottled amenities are diverted from the landfill and sanitized to be distributed to children and families around the world who otherwise would not have access to proper hygiene.

In addition, the Sheraton Stamford also offers an opportunity for its guests and customers to engage in sustainability through offerings such as electronic folios. There is no more wasted paper by printing stay folios for every guest that inevitably find their way to the trash can.
