LEAVENWORTH, WASH.—The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that works to protect wildlife habitats across the globe, recently honored Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort owner and CEO Harriett Bullitt at the group’s 50th anniversary gala in late October. The Conservancy recognized Bullitt and 18 other “Conservation Heroes” including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and former Washington state governor Mike Lowry. The event also featured famed anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall as the evening’s guest speaker. Goodall spoke of the 50 years since her first visit in 1960 to the Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study primates and the importance of continued conservation efforts.

“Harriet Bullitt knocks holes in the walls that separate us,” said Eliot Scull, a member of the Conservancy’s Washington board, in announcing the award. “She has a zeal and a passion for community, nature and the arts, and has brought them all together to benefit our natural world. We are tremendously grateful for her care of the natural world.”

Bullitt began her conservation work early in life; however she is perhaps best known for purchasing 67 acres outside of Leavenworth to protect the land from further development. The site was once the location of the Civilian Conservation Corps, known as Camp Icicle, during the 1930s and 1940s. Eighteen buildings which had been a part of the camp were saved and remodeled to meet or exceed current building and energy codes. In 1995, Bullitt founded Sleeping Lady on the site as an eco-friendly retreat. In 2008, Sleeping Lady received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification for Existing Buildings in recognition of Bullitt’s efforts.

“We are so proud of Harriet,” said Lori Vandenbrink, sales and marketing director at Sleeping Lady. “She has devoted her life to conservation of the environment and the special connection between people, art, and nature. She is truly an inspiration to us all.”
