Torrance Marriott Hotel Axes Water Use by 32 Percent

12/6/2010

TORRANCE, CALIF.—More and more companies have realized the importance of water conservation. A few simple actions can go a long way in saving water annually. The Torrance Marriott South Bay Hotel has embraced these fixes over the last three years and is pleased to announce it has reduced its water usage by 32 percent. Due to the hotel’s actions, the Torrance Marriott Hotel has saved more than 7.8 million gallons of water. This accomplishment affirms the hotel’s ongoing commitment to preserving the natural environment of Los Angeles.

The Torrance Marriott South Bay hotel has taken a variety of measures to reduce its water consumption to such a degree. Some of the more successful actions include responsible sprinkler usage, using native plants in landscaping projects, installing high efficiency toilets and integrating a “smart” irrigation system. This new irrigation system has the ability to detect weather conditions and avoid unnecessary watering. While some of these changes seem almost to come from science fiction, the hotel also implemented simple changes. The hotel installed aerators in kitchen units and added automatic sensor sink units in the restrooms. Additionally, the hotel has adopted a new education plan to spread awareness about water consumption.

The Torrance Marriott Hotel’s water conservation efforts will continue into the future, as the hotel is dedicated to reduce its effect on the environment. The hotel has also certified its Garden Court Restaurant with the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission. The commission recognizes the hotel’s on-site restaurant as “proactively preventing pollution.” In the future, the hotel plans to reduce its water consumption 25 percent by 2017 from its 2007 level. This goal is consistent with the overall Marriott brand’s “Spirit to Preserve” corporate initiative, which seeks to minimize water consumption and become a greener hotel chain. As a brand, Marriott is installing more than 400,000 low-flow showerheads and toilets and earning the Energy Star label at more than 275 of its hotels.
